Born to Be A Mountaineer

Born to be a Mountaineer

Objectives:

To create a video that would entertain and inform the entire freshman class during the downtime of a welcome event, invite interaction during and after the event, and reach a wider audience later when posted online.

Description:

A short video that humorously details a day-in-the-life of WVU’s mascot, the Mountaineer. The piece introduced the “Mountaineer Stance” and created a shared sense of belonging, connection, and identification with WVU and the Mountaineer tradition. Narrated by alum Jim Fagan, a well-known voice talent, the Brockumentary showed the Mountaineer, Brock Burwell, in his WVU-themed dorm room, in the cafeteria, and in recognizable campus locations, all while wearing his buckskins and carrying his rifle.

Audience:

The first audience was the 2010 freshman class, who were gathered in the Coliseum for the New Student Welcome. The video was later posted on the main WVU webpage and on the WVU channel on YouTube for all students, alumni, and members of the WVU community.

Measures of Success:

Student reaction during the event was positive, with many photos submitted (students were asked to text and e-mail photos of themselves doing the Mountaineer Stance). As of March 4, 2011, there have been 26,526 views views on YouTube. Five months after posting, it is still found on the main WVU website, and remains popular.
