FAQs

Basics

How do I start the process to get a website?
Please follow the steps on the Getting Started page.

How long will it take to get my site online?
Generally, the time frame for WVU departments is about three months after the initial meeting. Each department  must develop their own content.

Do you provide photos?
You can order photos from WVU Photographic Services or request a photo shoot.

Who will maintain my site once it’s online?
Once your site is designed, you are responsible for maintaining your site (e.g., updating text, photos, calendar, etc.).

Can I have a staff member or student update my site?
Yes. You should not, however, rely only on students to maintain your site. At least one permanent member of your staff must be capable of updating your site. Ideally, multiple staff members should be trained to do site updates. During the design or redesign of your site, we require that a permanent employee of your unit serve as the primary contact.

Can I design my own site?
It’s vital that all official WVU Web pages have a consistent brand and meet certain accessibility standards required of state institutions. For those reasons, we strongly urge you to consult with us or the professional technologist/designer in your college or department before proceeding with your Web project.

Can I have a personal website?
Yes, employees and students can use community.wvu.edu for creating personal websites. This service is offered by Information Technology Services. There are also many free services, such as Google, that students may use.

Why can’t I hire someone to do my website?
All WVU Web pages must comply with brand guidelines and accessibility standards required of state institutions. We suggest you contact us first to get the process started.

How do I submit an announcement for the Current Students site (formerly MIX)?
Use these submission guidelines to send announcements to MIX. Send to mix@mail.wvu.edu.

How can I add an event to the calendar?
Complete the event submission form to add your events to the University calendar. Submissions are subject to review. Your event will appear on the calendar after an administrator approves it.

How do I sign up for WVU Alert?
Register for WVU Alert to receive emergency email and text messages from WVU Police if you are a faculty or staff person at WVU. Students are automatically enrolled once they begin classes.  Write to wvualert@mail.wvu.edu if you have any questions.

Website components

Why do I have to have the WVU logo on my page?
All visitors should be able to easily recognize they are on a WVU site. We also try to keep certain elements consistent throughout all University Web pages to aid in navigation. This is why a standard header is required on all WVU sites.

Where is branding information?
Go to http://brand.wvu.edu for all WVU branding information.

Why do I have to list contact information on my site?
Contact information (email address, phone number, address) should be clearly visible on your site so visitors can contact you if they have questions or wish to receive more information about your program.

Departments are required to provide a physical address – not just a PO Box – so visitors can find your location using mapping software, and also to assist those sending packages or overnight deliveries to your office.

Can I add a blog?
Blogs can be added to websites that are in slate or CleanSlate. Before creating a blog, please familiarize yourself with the Blog Guidelines.

Accounts & Passwords

My password for slate/CleanSlate/Web Admin is not working. Can you re-set it?
Digital Services cannot re-set your password. Go to WVUID to re-set your password. If you have difficulty contact the Information Technology Service Desk at 304-293-4444 or ITSHelp@mail.wvu.edu .

Can I share my slate, CleanSlate or Web Admin account with someone else?
No, each person must request his or her own account. Sharing accounts violates the IT Account Management Standard.
