University Update from Sharon Martin

Campus Safety Updates

• Latest info is on the Return to Campus website or you can watch the latest Campus Conversation
• Stay vigilant in mask wearing, physical distancing and hand-washing

Commencement

• Planning for in-person ceremonies on May 15 & May 16; guests may be limited
• Celebrating the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021
• UREM will assist with production, videos, etc.

Legislative Session​

• President Gee and VP for Strategic Initiatives Rob Alsop presented to the Senate Finance Committee last Thursday regarding the University budget and the need to protect investment in higher education.​
• Legislation is expected to drop today that will help attract remote workers to the state. This is an effort between WVU and the WV Division of Tourism.
• Bills have been introduced that would affect the soft drinks tax (soda tax). Bills either suggest repealing the soft drinks tax or redirecting the funds elsewhere. Currently, $14 million a year comes to the University and is directed to HSC for maintenance and operations of the schools.
• Campus Carry legislation was introduced. WVU maintains we prefer current law and local control. Continuing to monitor.
• Variety of bills addressing public education; monitoring those as well.
• Under the Dome will be in E-news tomorrow.
